countdown to copenhagen
countdown to copenhagen. it's too important to fail, find out how you can help.
from december 7th to 18th, 2009, the international community will gather in copenhagen, denmark at the united nations conference on climate change. people, industries and nations are destroying the forests, acidifying the oceans, intensifying storms, diminishing food supplies, threatening mass extinctions, and leading to resource scarcity, massive dislocation of populations, and wars. copenhagen presents the best opportunity at this critical time in earth's history to create a successor treaty to the kyoto accord that will move the nations of this world toward a solution.
where do canada's politicians stand on this issue?
harper wasn't even going to go until obama said he was.
ignatieff's liberals (including so-called green champion stephan dion) just voted to kill canada's climate change bill.
the ndp has abandoned a carbon tax in favor of limited cap and trade. environmentalists and economists agree that we will not be able to make the necessary reductions in co2 emissions without a carbon tax.
these so-called national leaders aren't willing to take the steps necessary to achieve what canadians overwhelmingly desire; for canada to become a leader on climate change and green technology in general.
only elizabeth may and the green party of canada are calling for a commitment to binding targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 30% below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% by 2040. these are the levels necessary to avoid reaching a "tipping point" where there will be no way to stop or reverse the devastating effects of climate change.
be a part of the solution. tell our elected politicians that these issues are important to you and they won't be able to claim that canadians are telling them otherwise. we need to demand that our so-called leaders take these issues seriously and commit to binding targets. together we can make a difference. here are a number of ways you can help:
1. find out more and demand clear targets e.g. 350.org
2. sign a petition e.g. kyotoplus.ca, www.hopenhagen.org
3. write a letter to the editor.
4. call and write to mps:
environment minister jim prentice: minister@ec.gc.ca
prime minister stephen harper: harper.s@parl.gc.ca, (613) 992-4211
minister of natural resources lisa raitt: raittl@parl.gc.ca, (613) 996-7046
leader of the opposition michael ignatieff: ignatieff.m@parl.gc.ca, (613) 995-9364
5. discuss the situation, use your voice, be heard.
6. if we have elections this winter, make positions on climate change critical to your voting decision.
7. vote - we can get new light bulbs and new leaders.
